What is Lenovo S20-30?
Lenovo S20-30 is a laptop with good performance and display. Some people call it as “netbook” or “Notebook” and others as Laptop. Actually, it is slim line notebook, which slightly differs from our common laptop. It have many similarities like, both are portable, high performing processor, ram, batterylife and HD display. However, they do not have CD/DVD drive like a laptop, and have limitations in many ports and speaker features. In my opinion, notebook or netbook, mainly designed for business or internet uses and people also want compact sized, lightweight portable devices. In that point of view, Lenovo S20-30 is nice option and offers better user experience.
It released on the October 2014, manufactured by one of the great laptop brand, Lenovo. The most of the Lenovo products have good build and promising features, which already make a trust in people who seeks electronics devices. Both in terms of customer support and product services provide better choices to users.
Our Recommendation:-
For Office or Internet related applications only
Lenovo S20-30 Celeron Review: Design&Build (9/10)
The S20-30 is a compact and slim sized notebook. It is 46 cm in length, 38.6 cm in width and 13.2 cm thickness, when it is fully closed. It weighs around 1.3 Kg, so you can just hold with your one hand like a notebook. Because of the compact design, Lenovo S20 needs less space on your backpack ($4) and provides ultimate portability as compared with other high-performing laptops (bulky design). The body and patterned outer lid are matte finished, not have an attractive look at the first time. The body is completely made of plastic with fade of black color, not metallic type like Dell laptops. In my experience, plastic bodied laptops have less heating issues and minimize the overheating problems with better than metallic type.
Like other Lenovo notebook design, the inside and side spaces, are nicely used for arranging keyboard, mouse pad and ports peripherals. The arrangement of keyboard (called as “Chiclet keyboard”) is in good way, but has doubt in the fixing strength. While using it, I feel unusual shakes on the keypad buttons. This is not big problem, Lenovo made it as removable type. You can replace with new one, once it failed completely.
The mouse pad (Touchpad) positioned at the lower center potion, just after chic keypad. The touchpad is rectangle type with curved edges, sized around 8.1 cm length and 4.4 cm width. It also contains the left and right buttons like our ordinary mouse. It is very responsive and sensitive, support multi-finger touching for using basic gesture operation like select, rotate, zoom in, zoom out and scrolling.
Lenovo S20-30 contains 2 USB ports, one HDMI, 3.5 mm headphone, memory card reader and LAN cable port. The left side contains the processor Novo button, heat ventilation, RJ-45 port, HDMI and USB 3.0 port and right side contains power slot, USB 2.0 port, headphone 3.5mm audio out and memory card reader. The USB supports both USB 3.0 a or USB 2.0 pen drives without any problems and only you need to plugin to it and automatically detects and install in the system.
The memory card reader is only accessible, if you have compatible adapter. You can use the new Novo button provided by Lenovo in different uses like access BIOS setup or to enter boot menu or to start Lenovo OneKey Recovery system.
The disadvantage of this notebook founded is that contains only two USB ports. In my suggestion, needs one more USB drive for better user experience. If you have Bluetooth supported mouse or other peripherals, you can effectively use the two USB ports. Keyboard has not strongly placed and I think Lenovo provides a provision for users to replacement of keyboard, after its failure.
Tip!:- Keep your ventilation slots are in open condition, otherwise causes overheating.
It does not contain a CD/DVD drive. You can see that provision of CD/DVD is impossible with ultra thin and compact designed notebooks. For getting such design, need to sacrifices some features to make it simple and compact. Overall, S20-30 is a nice design, great build, good looking and lightweight notebook.
Lenovo S20-30 Celeron Review: Performance (8.2/10)
In performance terms, Lenovo S20 provides good speed with upgrade version of 2.16 GHz, Intel Celeron N2840 processor. The 2 GB DDR3L RAM also helps the boosting technology of Celeron processor and boosts up to 2.56 GHz, whenever there is need of speed. The Intel HD graphics nicely works with this processor and provide better graphics experience. It works great with default uses like net browsing and default apps (Internet explorer, MS office etc) usage. The 1080p HD movies would run smoothly without any interference and lagging problem.I feel system gets too slow while copying high sized data (around 20 GB) to my HP 250 W, 32 GB pen drive. It affects the normal speed of this laptop and takes extra 3 to 5 seconds to open the at least ‘my computer’.
The Ram expansion is not possible in this laptop, because it’s fully glued on the processor. That means built-in type RAM memory, no upgrading options provided. The overheating completely solved on this version and extra processor cooler fan makes this job better than the previous. The noise level of processor and cooler fan is too low, only heard the slight whirling sound, if you have a completely silent environment. However, it also eliminates the separate notebook cooling fan expense.
You can also play games with Lenovo S20 notebooks without any lag. If your game minimum requirement matches with the specification, just install and starts to play it. I tested this laptop by installing the latest TombRaider and not found any lag. The recommended games are Asphalt 8, Mortal combat, NFS Most Wanted etc.
I should not recommend this notebook, if you are a serious gamer. The main reasons are no high- performing spec, no ram and graphic upgrading and get less battery life, if you override this small system with high-graphics games. It is better to avoid high-end games with Lenovo S20-30 for better performance and battery in future.
Lenovo S20-30 Celeron Review: Display (9/10)
The display is fully HD, 11.6 inch (in diagonal) LED screen, have resolution of 1366x768 pixels. The Intel HD graphics support helps well to make it more crisper and high quality while watching HD pictures, movies and graphics oriented medium-end games. The anti-glare display helps to distractions by faulty lights from the atmosphere. The matte display outline also helps to reduce the light glare, due to less reflection of light on it. The screen also offers smudge resistance. The top frame of display provided with a 720p HD webcam having great wide angle. It also have built-in microphone, which helps a lot in video calling and personal video recording occasions.
Lenovo S20-30 Celeron Review: Software (8.5/10)
It comes with new and upgraded genuine Windows 8.1 (64-bit), so do not afraid to receive updates from the windows for better performance. The Windows 8.1 has many improvements from the Windows 8 such as provide start button, easy to access of apps, more user-friendly than windows 8 etc. It is comes with pre-installed form and there is no original DVD is provided. If you have any problems or computer unusual errors, use Novo button at the left side as previously mentioned in Design and build section.Lenovo S20-30 Celeron Review: OTHER FEATURES (8/10)
Storage
The storage capacity of Lenovo S20 is 500 GB, in which 390 GB is completely free for use. The space is taken for installation of operating system, driver and recovery memory. The harddisk type used is that Western Digital Scorpio Blue @5400 rpm. I were experience a slowest speed of 4 MB/s, while copying too many high sized files from one drive to other drive along with AutoCAD drawing works.Connectivity
In terms of connectivity like other laptops, it provides Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet connection support with port. It contains the latest Bluetooth version 4.0 and has Wi-Fi connectivity of Broadcom BCM43142 b/g/n. It support Realtex RTL810E family PCI-E fast Ethernet driver and you can find the Ethernet port left side, near to the ventilation.Sound
The Lenovo S20 offers Dolby sound with two small two speakers. The sound is not loud as well as bass. Please you don’t have much expectations in terms of S20-30’s sound. I think it is better to use high quality headphone for watching movies or for gaming or listening music with this equipment.Battery Life
The battery life is satisfactory, get around 6 hours with normal uses like MS office, watching movies, net browsing etc. It uses a 36 Watthour Lithium-ion, removable type. While playing games, found sudden decrease in battery charge (only got avg. life 2.5 hours). The power consumption is less in Lenovo S20-30.Finally
In the honest review of Lenovo S20-30 Celeron notebook, nice value addition for both office and internet uses. It gets decent battery life up to 5.2 hours in average and has good performance in above-mentioned applications. It is really worth for your money, if you did not expect more than spec of S20. Most irritated thing is that only two USB port at either side; Needs one more USB for connecting an external CD drive with USB connectivity. You can get better laptops or notebooks of different brands, but pays more for the slight increase in their features. The similar products matches with specs are Asus X205TA, ASUS X200MA-KX234D etc.Lenovo S20-30 specifications:-
